Daylily InformationDaylilies Make Few DemandsDaylilies are among the easiest of all perennials to grow and free of almost all diseases and pests. Daylilies are herbaceous plants and are not bulbs. They should be planted from well-formed vigorous plants in full sun. They need at least six hours of sun daily although some varieties tolerate partial shade. Daylilies will grow in almost any soil, but they do best in a slightly acidic soil. Mulch can be added to achieve this. Large flowered Daylilies should be planted 18 inches apart. Small flowered and mini's can be planted much closer together. Most multiply rapidly and can be divided every three to five years. (Fast multipliers are noted in our catalog.) Some Daylilies bloom more profusely if allowed to clump for longer periods without being disturbed while others need more frequent dividing. We use organic insecticide rarely and encourage ladybugs and lacewings to keep harmful bugs away. The deer have discovered our plants (after 9 years) here. Most of the plant is edible and Daylily buds are included in many Chinese meals. Try chopped buds and onions fried in butter or uncooked in salads.
